Blackjack is a simple card game that can be played with up to six players. The aim is to accumulate cards totalling 21, or as close as possible without going over. The first player to reach 21 automatically wins the round, unless the dealer has also reached 21, in which case the game is a draw.

Players are dealt two cards each, face up. The dealer is dealt one card face up and one card face down (the hole card). In addition, there are several different bets players can make during a blackjack game – we'll take a look at each of these below.

To begin the game, the player with the highest double-digit number goes first. If both players have identical numbers (e.g. 10), then the player with the lowest number goes first. In subsequent rounds, the player who won the previous round goes first.

The basic bet in blackjack is called 'hit' or 'stand'. To hit means to take another card from the dealer; to stand means you want no more cards and would like your turn over to the next player. Players must make their decision before the dealer reveals their hidden card – if they hit and bust (go over 21), they automatically lose the hand, regardless of what the dealer does.

If you have an Ace and a King (or any other combination totalling 10), you can choose to 'double down' on your bet – this means you double your bet but receive just one more card from the dealer. If this new card makes your total count over 21, you lose automatically, but if it doesn't then you have successfully increased your chances of winning significantly.

There are also various side bets that can be made in blackjack; we'll take a look at these below too:

Insurance bet: This bet is available when the dealer shows an Ace as their upcard. You place a bet equal to half of your original bet, and if the dealer does indeed have Blackjack (a two-card total of 21), then you win 2-1 on your insurance bet. However, most experts advise against making this bet as it has very low odds of success.

Even money bets: These are bets that pay out 1-1 when they come in, e.g. betting on red or black in roulette or betting on whether either player will get a Blackjack). They offer slightly lower odds than some of the other bets available in blackjack, but they are less risky so provide a good option for those who don't want to risk too much money.
